Oh how neat......mother nature at work. How neat to be able to watch this happen. Have you actually seen the eggs?  Can't wait to see her new family..........

I've never seen the actual eggs. Usually Touché will take her little family, once born, over to another garden area we have below that is always very bushy and we can see her with the babies coming out every once in awhile! Sure hope I can get a good picture of them!

How long as Touch'e  been doing this family thing and where is daddy?  I have only seen maybe 2 turtles......1 panted turtle and 1 large snapping turtle........in our area in the 10 years we have lived here........so this is going to be interesting to see go thru the process.

That's amazing.  I had no idea they ever returned to the scene of the crime (the laying).

Mind you, I am going by nature documentaries about sea turtles, so obviously I know nothing!!! :)

Thank you Missy for arranging and uploading this photoshoot.  We feel very privileged to witness it.

My tortoises don't go back to the nest site. The hatchlings have to fend for themselves once they hatch.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. I've noticed the shell looks a bit ragged at the front, it looks like it's had a close shave at some point.

Oh wow, I was gonna ask you about that Julia cuz we noticed that sometimes she's back laying in that hole and other times it's vacant for days, weird. Well we'll keep watch and see if there's ever any little ones to see! And Hopefully get pics of! :D

we've been here 15 years now Jeannie and every year we see lots of turtles, I guess we've probably seen 4 or 5 different ones around in the same day. I've never counted but will start keeping closer watch now as some are definitely different looking shells. And yes some are larger. We've seen babies several years and other years we watch the hole digging sitting in routine and never see babies, maybe we've just missed them? We actually even caught them in 'the act' once, that was most facinating. and yes we watched for just a little while as I assume it was he was arranging leaves etc, for a 'hiding place' but we left once we saw what was gonna take place!  Right now we have 2 different ones, they look a lot alike, but ones been in the front while the other is in the back by the hole area, so I assume it's dad out front- hopefully getting mom food! ;) I need to read up more on them, I obviously know nothing about them either cept they're gorgeous and fun to watch! :)

If you can get good pictures of their shells you will be able to tell the difference between them. They will all have different markings.

I think I'm right in saying the males has different coloured eyes to the females. I will double check that though.

They like to find a shady spot to rest in the midday heat. So you should find them scratching an area of soil and resting in the undergrowth.
