Pooky

A friend of ours moved into his new condo about a month ago and found out that the former tenant had been a "collector." Apparently, she brought in strays and couldn't care for them. She was evicted for having more animals than she could care for and she abandoned all of them when she moved out.

This one tiny cat kept coming up to our friend's door every night, yowling and scratching to get in her home. She would do this for hours and our friend is HIGHLY allergic, so they called us and of course, I took her in.

We found out that she was 6-8 months old gray tabby , and had probably been rescued from a shelter (she was spayed and microchipped). She had been on her own for about three months and was starving and dehydrated. She is very submissive and had scratches all over her chest and on her back (you could only see when you pushed back the fur).

We brought her to the vet and called the couple listed on her microchip, and it turned out to be the ones that abandoned her. They told us to drop her off where we found her and they would pick her up in a few months... yeah, right!

We kept her and named her Pooky (after Garfield's teddy bear).

She was very timid and took a week to adjust to being with us. Of course, Chloe (like most Shih Tzu) thinks that everything is so exciting and we MUST play with kitty all the time! She loved having a new playmate. Pooky was less excited and wanted away from this bouncy ball of fur! But, they both adjusted somewhat to one another. Chloe learned to lay patiently (kind of) and let Pooky approach her. Pooky learned that she is able to hop up on furniture to avoid Chloe.

Pooky gained a few pounds while in our care and adjusted to indoor life quite well. She is still skiddish around a lot of activity, but does enjoy being with people. She LOVES to hang out in our laps and purr.

We finally found her a home that is purr-fect for her! She now has a dog brother and sister (who are lazy little mix breeds and much calmer than Chloe). She also has another laid back cat brother! Not to mention a big house to explore and a new mommy and daddy that want to spoil her!

We are still working on getting her former owner's information off of the microchip. This was our second foster animal (our first was a Shih Tzu that only lasted a week) and it was a really rewarding experience! Although, we definitely realized we would rather have dogs than cats (litter boxes are awful).

Was she tested for Feline Leukemia or FIV (feline aids)? It would be a really good idea since she spent some time on the street. And it's great that you took her in and found her a home!

Yes! My vet does free basic visits and vaccines for rescues, so all I had to pay for were the tests. We were concerned, since we were looking to rehome her in a house with other cats.

Glad you saved her and found her a home. I don't see how a person can abandon their pets.
