Hi everyone - I posted this question about which crate size I should get in another topic but no response, so decided to start a new topic. I hope this is ok!

so I finally bought this size:

Petmate 41032: 24.6 x 16.9 x 15 inches

http://www.amazon.co...d=ATVPDKIKX0DER

it just arrived and I feel that it might be too big for puppy training. Any thoughts? what size do you usually use for a puppy? should I downgrade to this one:

Petmate 41031: 19 x 12.7 x 11.5 inches

http://www.amazon.co...d=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Thanks in advance!

The first link is the one I use for Yogi when we're traveling in our RV (he has a much bigger crate at home). But he's full grown and fully trained.

If you think it's too big, you can put a cardboard box in the back to take up some of the room. Just make sure your pup doesn't chews on it (a little shouldn't hurt, but not much).

But if your puppy hasn't had any accidents in it then it may work as is Despite the standard advice to use a crate where they just have enough room to stand up and turn around, some puppies do fine with a larger-than-necessary crate.

Here's an older post about a puppy apartment http://www.chattertzu.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20030

Basically, it's a big crate that is divided into a sleeping area and a bathroom. If you crate is too big, you could possibly set it up like that but you would have to have 2 doors.

ok, thanks for the ideas! the cardboard box is a great tip :) I read about the puppy apartment too a while back, it really is an awesome idea, but thought it's a little too expensive.

Thanks again!

This is the original Puppy Apartment:

http://modernpuppies.com/

I showed it to my husband who was astonished at the price. He said if I wanted to try one and see how it works I should order a floor grate for a small crate and he will cut it to fit. Frankly, much easier than spending that kind of $$ for the "original"!

Ummm . . . the Puppy Apartment just looks like a regular ol' crate with a divider panel in it to me. And the wires of the divider panel have been snipped to make a "door." I've got several old folding crates and dividers around. Maybe I should go into business.

But I can't imagine most puppies like being that close to their own "business."

Actually, there a few members who have a setup similar to that and as long as they are not sitting right on their mess and it get's cleaned out regularly they should be fine.
