8 month old mini shih tzu--agressive barking & confrontation after 6:00pm

Our 8 month old shih Tzu is a mini who is very loving & mellow until about 6:00pm each evening. At that time for much of the evening she barks, "charges" and runs "wildly from us. We say NO & she barks back and lunges. The next morning & until the next evening she is mellow so that the VET & others say you are lucky to have such a good puppy. Any ideas or suggestions.

Night time zoomie crazies.  Very common in puppies.  A good long walk/run/play time or training time will bleed off most of it.

Also a yummy chewie like a raw bone, a bullie, etc to gnaw on uses up excess energy.

Also a snack in the tummy calms them down.  How many times a day is she eating at this point?

This is playing!  Puppies (and adult Shih Tzu are very playful, and get great joy from playing for hours a day.  In fact, their need for play is as great as their need for exercise and love and food. ?

We have a 3 year old who does exactly this.  Bless her.  She is full of energy, and needs enthusiastic play and wrestling and fun every single day.  For at least an hour.

We have no problem at all with her doing this, and enjoy the games and fun. ?

She gets a walk every day, but what with time pressure and our work schedules, sometimes it isn't as long as it needs to be (she will happily trot for 3-5 miles if we have the time).  If she gets that amount of exercise, she is usually happy to snooze the evening away, but most days she needs a good walk AND some fun playtime too.

In wet weather, or when we are just unable to take her out, we schedule several boisterous play sessions.  Wrestling with her toy python, or tug of war with her string of sausages.  Or calling backwards and forwards for the length of the house to earn treats.

I usually end up sitting or lying on the floor with her having a proper wrestle.  She LOVES it.

Shih Tzus need a lot of play, otherwise they may develop behavioural problems such as excessive barking or repetitive nervous behaviours.

Good luck with your little darling.

Enjoy her puppyhood! ?

Ditto the others -- totally normal puppy shenanigans that's really just burning off energy. We LOVE the zoomies! So much fun to join in! Yogi's six now and sadly doesn't zoom quite as often as he used to. But he still manages to get going once in awhile. We drop whatever we're doing and have fun with him for a few minutes.

ETA: Although this behavior is most often referred to as the zoomies, I've also heard and used the term FRAP (frenetic random activity period). But it's much less commonly used than the zoomies.
