100 Ways to Help

Recommended Posts

I got this a few years back & every time around the Holidays, I try to get this to as many animal lovers as possible.

I have maybe one or 2 pets that are not rescues. But, most are. This idea came when I first got my German Shepherd. I ask on a message board like this (only for german Shepherds) about how I can help

Pets that do not have homes. I did explian that I don't have a lot of money to donate, but really wanted to help out. I really nice woman replied back to me with this & I have been doing some of what is on the list.

This is for your local shelters. The Animal controll Officer thinks it is really great when I bring something slightly use for the pets in our shelter. :aktion033:

I just don't do dogs either. My cat has a TON of his own toys to. My pets all get something from my family for Christmas. So, I donate what is still intake & reusable. :aktion033:

Feel free to cross post if you would like. :) I have permission & so do you. :)

Excellent suggestions. I have a bag that I put outgrown puppy stuff in, toys, and blankets/towels to take to our Humane Society. I really want to start volunteering a few hours a week, too. I could give baths or groom. Since I have bred litters, I feel it's important for me to do something for rescue as well. Thank you for the great reminders of what we can do.

This is really good...I was saddened however at one of our most popular shelters here. Awhile back, there was a "pet expo" at a big hall downtown. We went and about ever other booth gave out free sample food packets. So, I took home about 20-25 packages. I had intended to take them to this shelter....knowing I would not use them, yet they were free samples. So, I did. I took them to this shelter and you won't believe this.....They have a contract with Science Diet to not use any other food but theirs and they get a discount from Science Diet. They wouldn't even take this free food. I was rather disheartened, knowing I was giving free food yet they wouldn't take it. So, I took it to our cats vets office which is also the vet office for the Animal Control Division here. All animals picked up from Animal Control are taken to our vets office. The were ESCTATIC, even though they too sell Science Diet, they were very happy to have the food.

Anyway, there are so many things on that list that I would never have thought of, so thank you.

Also, on the same topic, but for "skins".....my husband travels A LOT....He always takes his own shampoo, etc. But, every hotel/motel leaves free shampoo, soap, lotion, etc. I have asked my husband to put it in his bag EVERY day, so that each day they put out more. He pays for it regardless in the price of a nights sleep, so I have him bring them all home. I then take them to the Ronald McDonald House near our Children's Hospital. They LOVE getting it, because so often people bring a child to the hospital not knowing they may be spending a few days and don't bring these supplies with them. Other places I have taken them are to our hospitals....they also love them because they too have people bringing loved ones in and they end up in intensive care and the family can stay in a room over night. They have one large bathroom where they can shower, etc and these supplies come in very handy. Another item I try to save in these supplies are the little toothpaste, floss and toothbrushes my dentist gives me, but I never use.

Just some other hints at the time of year that can help others in need.

Those are great ideas!

Another suggestion for all of those sample sized items......donate them to a homeless shelter, they are always in need of those items.
