No, I'm afraid I've never heard of it.  Can you ring your chemist to ask them questions if you have some concerns?

To be honest, when you read the fact sheet (I always do) the side affects are as long as your arm, and what's written on there puts anyone off for life of even starting to take that medicine!!! :( They're just covering themselves, but "normally" most people are okay with taking the drug, with little side affects, unless you know you have an allergy to the ingredients for example, then that's different.

Thanks Alex,

The doctor spoke with me yesterday about the drug and yes I know what you mean when you read those possiable side affects...they are very scarey indeed.

He is trying me out on a low dose to help relieve some of the pain and inflammation of arthritis in my back and hip till X-rays are taken to see what's wrong.

Sorry Crystal I haven't heard of it either, I do take arthritis meds but haven't heard of that one. Is it a NSAID? There's so many of those I can't keep up with all of the names any more..

  • Ah must be one of the new ones then! I know those fact sheets always scare me! Most of the NSAIDs I've taken are ok, some do upset my stomach so you probably want to take it with food. I sure hope you feel better soon and find out what's causing your pain. Hugs :pash:

Here you go - you can look up any drug used in the UK

http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/formulary/bnf/current/10-musculoskeletal-and-joint-diseases/101-drugs-used-in-rheumatic-diseases-and-gout/1011-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs/meloxicam

and it is worth crosschecking any drug you take with any other drug you take here:

http://ukhealthcare.uky.edu/druginteractionchecker.aspx?id=4294967314

My doc never checks this before prescribing, so I always do it myself.

Ouch.......never have heard of this drug either. One suggestion I have is do some reading up on magnesium supplements. I know you don't have a bath tub anymore but make a spay solution of Epsom salts and water and after a shower when your pores are open spray with the Epsom salt solution. I am standing on my soap box again but try something less harmful to your system first before resorting to drugs.....drugs NEVER cure the issue it is just a quick fix to relieve the issue until your body gets ammune to it and then you have to resort to something stronger.......I am stepping down of the box now.

I suppose to call the X-ray dept Monday morning and book a appointment......Whenever that date might be, I then wait one week after they are taken for them to be read and put on computer...then make a another appointment to see my doctor to review them and plan a course of action by what it shows.... As you can tell it's not going to be a quick answer.  Osteoarthritis runs in my family and I've seen this degeneration in my mother and grandmother so it comes as no surprise. That's why I'm on my diet to lose weight as its not good on joints as the cartilage gets thinner.....I already had a toe joint lost to it...sure don't want to lose a hip joint next. Hell getting old ain't it?

He was correct I see now to put me on a low dose of Meloxicam in the meantime with a backup of cocodimol if I needed it....It's going to be a long wait for answers..... Though I was slightly sleepy from it yesterday..... I felt no pain nowhere in my body and slept without pain waking me last night. One pill suppresses a hormone that causes the inflammation for 24 hr. periods and I didn't need the stronger codeine tablet. So if I have to wait at least I'm not suffering.

Oh wow what a long wait that will be Crystal.. Am so glad to hear the med is working and relieving the pain. I too have arthritis, have since I was 17. I just stumbled upon something they actually used in my physical therapy for my pinched nerve and I just tried on my arthritis with great success. I will do a separate post on it but it's called Kinesiology taping.

Hands up :sad?:

How many of us would be interested in starting up a new Blog topic just for us aging baby boomers......Just so we can discuss  helpful health tips, medication, home remedys, dietary supplements, useful links... Anything related to aging or being ill so it's separate from the main home page but but still accessible for those that want to talk about and share our treatments?

If we get enough interest ....maybe something to think about. What do you think? Any member can add a new blog would you like to head it up?

  • You can count me in if you don't mind me getting on my SOAP BOX.........They have a group call The Red Hats Society we could call us The Old Bones Society............

One thing I also should mention is A LOT of the foods we eat cause inflammation in our joints.....I am not an expert by no means but having done a lot of reading in regards to Bill's issues food helps us survive but it also is one of our worse enemies....and doctors are not trained when it comes to what you can eat or not eat......your on your own.  As one doctor told me ......let him eat whatever he wants if it bothers him then he don't eat it again.......

I never in a million years ever thought I would be blogging to The Old Bones Society.......let it be know no matter how old you are what information is given on this blog will help those of the younger generation to get there act together before they get to the Age of Old Bones. :coffee: And just like our paws what works for one may not work for someone else. I am and have always been a person that goes with the natural way before going to taking a drug...even if it over the counter medication...... I will tell you my medicine cabinet is pretty much empty.....and hopefully will stay that way. With all of us sharing our experiences this should be a very interesting Blog..............great idea Crystal...........

How about Crinkly (Jo) make us a topic about being a diabetic when you get time...many could benefit from that imfo

Anyone? How about a blood pressure topic?

So happy to be amoung friends with the same ailments.... I'm going to enjoy this blog also. So many tips Ive already read about but now lost in old conversations .....hopefully they will get posted here now and can be found easily.

Vicky ( Can you copy and paste your article about the muscle tape over here so it don't get lost?)

JoAnne can you think of a topic to add?

I'm taking this and have been for about 12 years...maybe longer. I have severe rheumatoid for 28 yrs now and have been on most of the meds. I've been through all the biologics and have exhausted my choices....no relief so I'm still on a high dose of steroids (prednisone) to be able to move. I can probably list more meds then most people have heard of.... :(

I take Meloxicam every day for arthritis pain.  My dr told me that it is like ibuprofen but stronger.  I take it once a day instead of having to take ibuprofen multiple times.  I've been on it for about a year with no issues or side effects.

That is great to hear!  I'm very happy to hear that it is working well for you.  I was a little skeptical at first, but it has helped me a lot.  My biggest issue was having to take so many ibuprofen so many times a day.  I told my dr that I felt like I was going to overdose by accident.  She laughed at me and gave me this.

The X-rays will be reviewed with me Sept 5th. But in the meanwhile I recieved a letter from the doctors office that said it showed degenerative bone disease and wear and tear nothing else mentioned ..... So guess I will be on these meds and pain killers right on..they do help

Have you done any research on joint supplements like glucosamine/chondroitin -- basically the same stuff we give dogs? It can really help some people rebuild the cartilage around damaged joints, which (of course) helps lessen the bone-on-bone damage and pain.

Per my vet and my human doctor the difference is that all dogs have the enzyme needed to metabolize glucosamine/chondroitin but only about 50 percent of people do. So it's a flip of a coin whether it helps a human or not.

I ordered my mexicam refill Monday since I don't want to live without it....it's been amazing for my hip pain and have been painfree since I've been on it.

Well........ It's now Thursday and hubby was right there at the pharmacy today so he dropped in to pick it up...Nothing there he calls and says. So thinking the doctors office has Boo bood again I gave them a call...

So it goes something like this....there are no records you ordered it....yes I did...oh let me look in this...mmmm

Oh here's a note! .......Surprise surprise

The doctor did review your refill prescription and has noted your last test showed the mexicam was damaging to your kidneys and they weren't coping .......so you can't have anymore of these.

So I'm hanging on the end of the line thinking...what did I just hear? I asked her to clarify I'm not to take anymore...yes mam you are Not to take any more mexicam. Sooo do I still take the cocodimol? Oh yes you still can have those..just not mexicam. If your hip pain reoccurs when you come off them you will need to see your doctor for injections instead.....

I'm mad now...and it's time for a rant ...It was over a month ago I had those blood tests and was allowed another prescription on that date after my doctor reviewed the results.

Now 30 days later they tell me it's damaging my kidneys...and they put a NOTE on my file which she had to dig to find....when were they going to tell me when I'm on dialysis? .....if I wasn't a lady I'd cuss :bomb: right now

How come no letter, no phone call, no email?..nothing was forwarded to me informing of something so important that could damage my health...So now I'm coming off them as of tonight....time will tell if the inflammation and pain returns just when it's turned cold and winter is upon us...my worst months.

Ok rant over....Doctors! Grrrrrrrrr Hate em

Oh Crystal!  What a blow!

please write and complain.  Nothing will ever change, if you don't.

and can i suggest you get a printout of your blood test results?  I can't remember if you have Patient Access over the internet?  If you do, log in and see if you can dig out your old kidney blood test results, and the latest ones.  Then YOU get to see what they are talking about, and YOU get to do the reading to know how much damage has been done.

if it helps, i did some reading on kidneys a while back (type 2 diabetics often have reduced kidney function), and i remember reading that kidneys CAN often heal, so the damage may just be temporary.

goodness, i hope your pain doesn't come back!

i don't trust doctors to do anything properly. :(

So going by this last blood test which was July,...cough cough...July!.......Found this NHS site that explains the numbers http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Kidney-disease-chronic/Pages/Diagnosis.aspx#results

By that chart  I was stage two then  (*2)......why did they let me continue? Am I being paranoid? Well yeah, cause after I stopped taking it yesterday common sense should prevail and I'll get notification for a follow up blood test to check that the level falls after a month....Not holding my breath over notification.....will have to ask for it myself I'm sure.

Gosh Crystal so sorry your going thru this medical nightmare..........when you get time do some reading on vinegar (Pinterest should have some suggestions on how to mix it with other liquid ) I personally know people that had aches and pains and forms of arthritis and drinking vinegar in grape juice or tomato juice daily made a huge difference in their lives.....prescription medication for them was affecting other organs in there body also and had to go off them.
