SUNDAY 31st July: Seafront promenade florals

Crinkly

Cato:  Sausage breakfast, then a really boring walk along the seafront.  We have to wait til the end of September before we get the beach back :( so we walked by the stinky flowers, wot Mum had to photo for you.  Yawn, and then back along the path bit.

It woz a bit hot, and I got thirsty.  Sausage makes you thirsty anyway, doesn't it?  And Tara climbed on everything, of course.

Mum:  Today was a completely different routine.  There was a charity fun run (10k) so lots of roads were closed, and the forecast was for hot sun later, so we nipped out early, Dad and me and the Hounds, for breakfast on the seafront, and then trundled along the floral displays.  Remember how I said they had made a special effort with the seafront flowers this year, for the Armed Forces Day a few weeks ago?  and how the parks got the left overs this year?  Well I am sure you will see what I mean... :)

This is an anchor, in case you were wondering (had to do a weird side on angle for all of these, because the sun was kind of behind the flowerbeds)

Nearly every lamp post in the resort has one of these:

This was the return, on the beachfront promenade.  MUCH more fun for the Hounds (Cato wanted that blue plastic crisp packet SO MUCH)

Tara was most put out to see NO ONE on the beach AT ALL, but not to be allowed down there herself.  Not Fair!  (she said)

These are petunias planted at the foot of one of the sea front palms

And this is the wee Tourist Train that runs along the front, £1 a ride.

And did you notice there weren't any orange geraniums?  Didn't see ANY.  Not sure why...

Thank you!

The flowers are watered from a little vehicle that is basically a water tank with a long stick.  They hold the stick up and pump water.

Can't imagine how much it all costs!  Although I understand that the bedding is planted and grown at the local agricultural college, and that businesses sponsor particular tubs and areas of planting.

Yeah must cost a fortune..quite intensive work all done by hand..not automatically. Nice though that the businesses sponser areas. Thanks Jo.

Lovely gardens...so colorful! Not fair they can't run on the beach... I'd love to be able to take my crew to go running on the beach but there isn't any here where they're allowed.

Do you know how they water the lawns and flower beds?  In ground sprinklers?

I think I saw a few orange geraniums among the petunias under the sea front palms.

What a gorgeous display.....looks like something you'd see in Disneyland.

Well spotted on the geraniums!!!

I don't think they water the grass at all.  We tend to get enough rain round here (understatement of the year!).

There is a general expectation that lawns will brown a bit in dry patches, then green up rapidly as soon as there is rain.

The flowerbeds, on the other hand, might need a bit more.  Didn't see any sign of sprinklers or water systems at all, but will keep an eye out and see if I ever spot them.

Wow love all the pictures........it is great when towns can find the money and volunteers to beautify the areas...... around here they just manage to keep the grass mowed...........the tourist towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg Tn...... put on a colorful show with flowers but then you have to deal with traffic and PEOPLE to try and see them..........so thank you for posting these pictures I enjoyed them in the comforts of my own home.  When I lived in Michigan I traveled to Holland Michigan for the tulip festival......talk about breath taking.......so colorful and millions of tulips........then Frankenmuth Michigan is a German town that has two well know chicken eateries that people flocked to and that town had their main streets decked out in petunias and geraniums and if you lived on the main street you had to comply by having the flowers in your yard........Not only was the chicken wonderful but the flowers were worth the trip to see...........

:ohyeah: It is, isn't it?

Took me ages to get my head around being in a town, in a terraced house, away from the rolling Welsh hills... but after adjusting, I absolutely LOVE the place.  The only thing that I will always hate is the fact we don't have off road parking.  But maybe one day we will move a couple of streets over, to where we get more garden and a space for the car.  In all other respects the house is perfectly situated, so 98% perfect is still pretty perfect, isn't it?
